ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID CITY

 Il-kliem ta' dan l-innu kienu miktuba minn Mrs C.F. Alexander (1818 - 1895) li uzat kliem mirqum tal-lingwa ingliza biex tiddeskrivi l-grajja ta' Betlem b'mod haj hafna.  Din il-mara kiteb ukoll hafna poeziji ghat-tfal li gneralment is-suggetti taghhom kienu kollha religjuzi. Hija kienet il-mara ta' l-isqof ta' Derry.  Il-muzika kienet kompozizzjoni ta' H.J. Gauntlett.  Dan l-innu x'aktarx li kien pubblikat fil-bidu tad-dsatax-il seklu.

F'lejl ta' xitwa
(Once in royal David's city)

F'lejl ta' xitwa ġewwa Betlem
F'kesħa kbira, f'għar miftuħ
Daħlet Omm u wildet Iben
Qalb il-bhejjem li saħħnuh
Din l-Omm fqajra hi Marija
U Ġesù, dik it-tarbija.

Huwa ġie mis-sema fostna
Ħalla l-kobor, ħalla l-ġid
Għex fil-faqar, fit-tbatija
Ried jinħeba l-aqwa sid
Qalb il-foqra u l-imsejknin
Magħhom kien Ġesù Bambin.

Bħalna beka, bħalna feraħ
Waqt li għex fost il-bnedmin
Mat-triqat fejjaq u għallem
Il-ħabib tal-maħqurin
Ħajtu kollha fit-tiġrib
F'mewtu wkoll fuq is-salib.

Once in royal Davids city,
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her Baby,
In a manger for His bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ, her little Child.

He came down to earth from heaven,
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall:
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

For He is our childhood's pattern;
Day by day, like us, He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles, like us He knew;
And He cares when we are sad,
And he shares when we are glad.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,
Through His own redeeming love;
For that Child so dear and gentle,
Is our Lord in heaven above:
And He leads His children on,
To the place where He is gone
